Give a man a bowl of rice, you feed him for day. Teach him farming, you feed him for life.
विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद्याति पात्रतम् |
पात्रत्वाद् धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्म ततः सुखम् ||
vidhyA dhadhAthi vinayam vinayAdhyAthi pAthrathAm
pathrathvAdh DHanamApnOthi DHanAdhDHarma thathaha sukham
Meaning:
Knowledge makes you humble; humility gives you character; good character attracts wealth; wealth can be used for doing good deeds. This in turn leads to happiness in the world.
न चोरहार्यं न च राजहार्यं न भ्रातृभ्राज्यं न च भारकारि।
व्यये कृते वर्धत एव नित्यं विद्याधनं सर्वधनप्रधानम्॥
na chorahaaryaM na cha raajahaaryaM na bhraatRubhaajyaM na cha bhaarakaari |
vyaye kRute vardhata eva nityaM vidyaadhanaM sarvadhanapradhaanam ||
Meaning:
It cannot be stolen by a thief.
It cannot taken away by a King.
It cannot be divided among brothers.
It does not cause load. It always increases when spent.
The wealth of knowledge is the greatest of all wealth.
